Take a Journey Through the Enchanting City of Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is one of the most enchanting cities in all of Switzerland, and it’s filled with sights that’ll captivate and excite you, no matter what kind of explorer you are. It’s got so much to offer that you won’t be able to see it all in just one day (or even one week), but here are some of the highlights that you absolutely shouldn’t miss during your time here, no matter what time of year you visit.

Essentials to Pack

UPDATED] Lauterbrunnen Switzerland Travel Guide

No matter what time of year you visit, you’ll want to pack your hiking boots and comfortable walking shoes. Lauterbrunnen is nestled in between mountains, so there are plenty of scenic trails to explore. And if you’re visiting in the winter, don’t forget your heavy coat! You’ll also want to pack a camera to capture the natural beauty all around you.
The breathtaking scenery will leave you speechless and maybe even inspire some amazing art or photography. With all the natural beauty surrounding this city, it’s easy to feel at peace here. There are plenty of things to do as well, like exploring the town center or taking a trip on one of their many scenic trains! If you’re an artist, then make sure to stop by one of the many art galleries for inspiration.

Day 1 – The Trummelbach Falls

How to Visit Trümmelbach Falls (& Is It Worth It)

As you walk through the town, you can’t help but notice the beauty that surrounds you. The mountains are so calm and the air is fresh. There are many things to do in this enchanting city, but one of the must-sees is the Trummelbach Falls.
You could spend hours just walking around admiring the natural beauty that surrounds you. It was hard to take my eyes off of all the rocks surrounding me, not because they were grandiose but because they seemed so calming and natural. I found myself feeling relaxed, even though I had only been there for 10 minutes. Walking down to the falls was beautiful as well.
If I had come here with someone else we would have spent hours taking pictures and exploring everything there is to see at this incredible site. When I first walked into the cave it felt like something out of Harry Potter. There was water pouring from every side, cascading from what seemed like an endless height. When you make your way up to the top of the falls it feels like nothing will ever be able to stop your climb up.

Day 2 – The Glacier Garden Trail

Glacier Garden Trail (Nr. 17) | Zermatt, Switzerland

It’s an easy hike with stunning views of the valley, waterfalls, and glaciers. The trailhead is located just behind the Hotel Jungfrau. From there, it’s a short walk to the Trümmelbach Falls, which are worth seeing even if you don’t hike the trail.
After that, the trail winds through forests and meadows before reaching the glaciers. If you want to venture further into the mountains on foot, take a left at the junction near Alpiglen and follow the signposts for Grosse Scheidegg. There’s also an additional trail that leads up towards Winteregg which can be reached by taking a right at the junction near Alpiglen.
At the end of this trail, you’ll find a glacier overlook platform where you’ll get breathtaking views of the ice-covered landscape below.
If you’re in good shape, it’s possible to continue on to Grosse Scheidegg and take an onward train to Kleine Scheidegg. Keep in mind that you’ll need plenty of time to complete both trails because there’s no public transportation back down.

Day 3 – Mürren and The Wengernalp Train

Wengernalp Railway (Wengernalpbahn)

After a short bus ride from Stechelberg, we arrived in Mürren – a small car-free village nestled in the Berner Oberland region of Switzerland. From Mürren, we took the Wengernalp Train – one of the oldest mountain railways in Europe – up to Kleine Scheidegg.
The train ride was breathtaking, with sweeping views of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains. When we reached Kleine Scheidegg, I felt as if I had stepped into a postcard. After taking in the beauty of this Swiss town, we had an incredible lunch at the Hotel Bellevue des Alpes before heading back down to Mürren.

There were many other stops along the way that could have easily been added to our itinerary including visiting Mönchsjoch or Grindelwald. But when you’re in Switzerland, you want to explore all that is has to offer so we are going to be back soon!

Day 4 – Going up to Grütschalp with A Mountain Bike

IMBODEN BIKE (Lauterbrunnen) - 2022 What to Know Before You Go

The fourth day of my exploration began with a journey up to Grütschalp. I went by mountain bike, which was a great way to see the scenery. The views were breathtaking, and I even got to see some wildlife along the way.
Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure. After going through the biking trails, I took a detour on foot and found that there are many small streams along the side of the trail. There is also a waterfall at one point where you can get down to get closer to its beauty.
I was in such awe as I continued on my hike because of how incredible everything looked, from nature’s touch to man-made structures like bridges over streams and waterfalls; not to mention how all this contrasted against Switzerland’s beautiful backdrop.

Day 5 – Going up to Falkenfluh With An E-Bike

Tour 3 – 6 hours – Lauterbrunnen – Valley of the 72 waterfalls | Flying Wheels Interlaken Bike Center

Today, we decided to go up to Falkenfluh, which is one of the highest peaks in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. We rented e-bikes, which made the journey a lot easier, and started off early in the morning. The ride was absolutely breathtaking, with towering cliffs on either side and waterfalls cascading down. We even got to see some ibex and chamois! Once we reached the top, we were rewarded with stunning views of the valley below. From here, you can also get great photos of Jungfrau. After taking it all in for a while, we hopped back on our bikes and headed back down the mountain. It was an amazing day trip that I will never forget! It takes about 3 hours to drive from Interlaken, where we are staying, to Lauterbrunnen.
I hope this blog post has helped give you an idea of what beautiful sights await visitors! I’m looking forward to exploring more of Switzerland’s natural beauty and culture next week. Stay tuned for my next blog post, coming soon!
