Kalalau Valley – exploring the beauty of one of Hawaii’s most stunning locations

It’s no wonder that this valley attracts so many people from all over the world to come and experience its natural beauty and awe-inspiring settings. To truly understand Kalalau Valley and its beauty, you need to take a trip there and get lost in the natural wonder of it all.
Photographing Kalalau Valley

There are plenty of things to do in Kalalau Valley, from hiking to camping to simply enjoying the views. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy some natural beauty, Kalalau Valley is definitely worth a visit.

Mahana Ridge Trail
The Mahana Ridge Trail is one of the best ways to experience the Kalalau Valley. The trailhead is located at the end of the Kalalau Lookout Road, and from there it winds its way through some of the most stunning scenery in Hawaii. Along the way you’ll get sweeping views of Kalalau Beach, as well as the valley itself.
The trail is about 3 miles long, and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. It’s relatively flat with very little elevation change, but it can be quite challenging due to the length and lack of shade on a hot day. There are many places along the trail where you can go off the path and enjoy breathtaking views, take pictures, or just sit and relax for a bit.
Hanakapi’ai Falls
The first stop on our Kalalau Valley hike was Hanakapi’ai Falls. This beautiful waterfall is about a mile from the trailhead and is a great spot to take a break, have a snack, and enjoy the scenery. The falls flow into a pool that is perfect for swimming on a hot day.
If you are looking for a more difficult climb up the valley wall, keep following the road. You will come across the Waialeale Stream, which flows off the side of Kaua’i. Once you reach this point, it is important to use caution because there is no protection from falling rocks or collapsing terrain.
Nu’alolo Cliffs Trail
The Nu’alolo Cliffs Trail is one of the most popular trails in Kalalau Valley. The trailhead is located at the end of Nu’alolo Kai Beach and leads to a breathtaking view of the valley. The trail is about 2 miles long and takes about 3 hours to complete.
The scenery along the way is absolutely stunning, and the views from the top of the cliffs are truly breathtaking. If you’re looking for a challenging hike with incredible views, this is definitely the trail for you! The first two miles of the trail were easy to walk on, but the last mile was very difficult.
It was an extremely steep climb up what felt like a never-ending staircase. But when we finally reached the top, it was worth every step.
Secret Beach / Auwana Beach
Situated on Kauai’s north shore, Kalalau Valley is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in Hawaii. From the cliffs of the Napali Coast to the secluded beaches of Secret Beach and Auwana Beach, there is no shortage of natural beauty to explore in this idyllic setting.
Between these two beaches, we found a small cove with a tiny sand beach that was hidden from view until you were right at the edge of it. With the ocean crashing against the rocks nearby, this little spot was perfect for relaxing with a book or playing in the water.
The white sands provided an ideal backdrop for pictures and offered more than enough space for an afternoon picnic. For anyone looking to get away from the crowds, this is definitely a good place to visit!
Ke’e Beach / Ke’e State Park
Ke’e Beach is the starting point for many Kalalau Valley hikes and is one of the most popular beaches on Kaua‘i. The turquoise water and white sand are beautiful, but be aware that there is no lifeguard on duty. This beach is also a great place to watch the sun set over the Na Pali Coast. From this point, you can hike north along the coast or head inland up the valley towards Hanakapi’ai Falls.
An hour-long trek through the valley will bring you to a waterfall where you can go for a swim in cool pools underneath it. You might need a flashlight if you’re hiking after dark. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes because the rocks can be slippery underfoot at certain times of day.
The Wainiha Beach
Wainiha Beach is one of the most beautiful and secluded beaches on Kauai. With its dramatic cliffs, pristine turquoise waters, and white sand beaches, it’s no wonder why this spot is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
However, what makes Wainiha Beach truly special is its location. Nestled at the base of Kalalau Valley, this beach provides visitors with breathtaking views of one of Hawaii’s most stunning natural wonders. The valley features lush green mountainsides that are filled with ferns, palm trees, waterfalls, and even wild horses. The trail to Wainiha Beach offers hikers a glimpse into this incredible landscape without any vehicular traffic to distract from the view.
Koloa Landing
The best way to experience Kalalau Valley is by hiking in from Koloa Landing. The trail is well-maintained and takes you through some of the most stunning scenery on Kauai. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the way. The hike can be challenging at times, but it’s worth it when you reach the valley and see the incredible views.
We found ourselves often stopping to take pictures or just taking a break to soak up the moment. It’s important to note that this hike requires good physical fitness and comfort with heights, so make sure you have someone with you who knows what they’re doing if you’re not an experienced hiker. Overall we loved the time we spent in Kalalau Valley – it was a great adventure!
Kipu Kai
A visit to Kalalau Valley is not complete without a stop at Kipu Kai. This beautiful spot is known for its dramatic cliffs, lush vegetation, and clear blue waters. Visitors can enjoy hiking, swimming, and picnicking in this secluded paradise. Some visitors even choose to stay overnight!
The water is cold so make sure you bring plenty of snacks and drinks! If you are lucky enough to visit on a sunny day you will find it hard to resist taking off your shoes and dipping your toes into the cool water.

Na Pali Coast via Boat Tours from Port Allen / Lihue Airport, Kauai, HI
The Na Pali Coast is one of Kauai’s most popular tourist destinations. And for good reason – the dramatic cliffs, emerald waters, and lush vegetation make it a truly breathtaking sight. While there are several ways to see the Na Pali Coast (including hiking and helicopter tours), taking a boat tour is by far the best way to experience its beauty.
Not only do you get to see the coastline from a different perspective, but you also get to enjoy the ride on a comfortable catamaran. Plus, if you’re lucky enough to be in port when a pod of spinner dolphins swims near your boat, it’ll be an experience that lasts a lifetime!
