Culture of islands
The small village of Gasadalur is located on the west coast of the island of Vagar, in the Faroe Islands. The village is surrounded by natural beauty, with cliffs rising up on one side and the ocean on the other. The culture of the islands is based around fishing and sheep farming, and this is reflected in the village.
There are a few small shops and restaurants, as well as a school and a church. The villagers are friendly and welcoming, and it’s easy to feel at home here. With such beautiful surroundings, its not hard to see why many people want to come and explore the place for themselves. But beware – after visiting you might never want to leave! One of the best places to visit while there is Vestmanna-dýr (Sea-woman’s Garden), which is an area that has been preserved untouched for over four thousand years.
From here, you can walk along ancient stone walls and past hidden caves. Visitors also enjoy seeing the large colonies of birds that inhabit the area and going out onto rocks from where they can get great views across the bay and beyond into open water.

Food
The food in Gasadalur is some of the best I’ve ever had. The seafood is fresh and delicious, and the local lamb is also amazing. The restaurants here are all top-notch, and you’ll definitely want to try as many as possible.
On my first night, I tried a little bit of everything from a nearby restaurant and absolutely loved it.
On my second night, I visited Tórshavn’s famous Dokk 10 restaurant for dinner (it’s known for its cod). It was fantastic! If you have time during your visit to Gasadalur, be sure to check out this place! They offer tours of their production facility, where you can learn about how their most popular dish is made.
They also have a museum with various artefacts that give insight into the history of the country. From the hillside overlooking the harbor at Old Town Æðuvík, to Aquarium Rock just outside of Ólavsøka Stadium where children play on weekends. My favorite spot has been Lighthouse Hill which offers an incredible view over Vágar Harbor and towards other islands on one side, while on the other side lies Ólavsøka Stadium.
Lodging
There are no hotels in Gasadalur, but there are a few Airbnbs. I stayed in this one and it was great. It’s right on the water and has a deck with chairs and a table so you can enjoy the view. There are also a few apartments in the village that are owned by locals. If you’re looking for something more rustic, there are also a few camping spots along the hiking trails.
The campgrounds are free and available to anyone who wants to stay the night. The campsites offer little amenities other than fire pits, picnic tables, and toilets. Campers need to bring their own tents or sleeping bags! Be sure to call ahead if you want to make a reservation because they fill up quickly. Each site is equipped with running water, toilets, and fire pits. For a small fee, an individual camper can buy wood at the start of the campsite loop.
They don’t sell food so be sure to pack some snacks and drinks. Also, all fires must be contained within a designated area so take care not to leave your things too close to the fire pit. The campground near Skálafjørður Fjord offers 10 sites as well as kayak rentals. Nearby Geitafell Mountain also offers beautiful views from its summit and access to streams perfect for trout fishing.

These days, only 150 people live in the village year round, but during summer this number grows to more than 4 times as many. If you’re looking for seclusion and peace while you’re travelling, you should visit this remote little town. But if you want to experience all the hustle and bustle, there’s plenty of restaurants, pubs, hotels, museums, and shops waiting for you too. Either way your trip will be unforgettable! And the best part is that if you want to stay forever, the area has plenty of opportunities for permanent residence.

- Hike to the top of Mulafossur Waterfall: The hike to the top of Mulafossur waterfall is short but steep, and the views from the top are incredible. Be sure to bring your camera!
- There are several hot springs located throughout Gasadalur, each with its own unique views. Make sure to try them all out!
- Visit Sea-Bird Island: Sea-Bird Island lies off the coast of Gasadalur, just a few miles away.
- Get inspired by nature’s beauty: Nature is everywhere here; be sure to stop and take it all in while you’re here! If you’re looking for an adventure with less crowds than other popular destinations, then Gasadalur is the place for you. After hiking up one of its waterfalls or exploring its forests.
- Camp under the stars on Mulafossur beach: Nothing beats watching a beautiful sunset from your campsite on Mulafossur beach!
- Eat some traditional Faroese food: Be sure to eat some traditional Faroese food while you’re there (and do your best to learn how to pronounce it correctly)!
- Listen to folk music at Hovs Hallar: This restaurant serves traditional fare along with folk music and poetry performances seven days a week.
