The holy city – charleston: A journey of exploration
The holy city of Charleston, as many know it, has been an active tourism destination in the United States for quite some time now. Most people are at least passingly familiar with it, especially if they’ve ever seen Gone with the Wind or even just pictures of its historic downtown area. But there’s so much more to this city than meets the eye, and there are plenty of adventures waiting to be had by anyone willing to look!
Culture and people
Charleston is a beautiful city with a lot of history. It’s known for its art, architecture, and market. There are plenty of things to do in Charleston, from exploring the museums to walking around the historic district. The people in Charleston are friendly and welcoming, and there’s a sense of community here that you won’t find in many other places.
I had the opportunity to walk around some parts of Charleston before I left, and it was really interesting to see how much beauty was tucked away in such an old town. The market was very different than any I’ve seen before; it had items from all over the world and everything seemed so fresh! Things to do in Charleston include strolling through Folly Beach or hanging out on Sullivan’s Island.
You can also check out Battery Park, where you’ll find one of the best views of the entire city. If you’re looking for something more cultural, then plan a visit to the Gibbes Museum of Art.
Events and festivals
The annual Charleston Wine + Food Festival is a can’t-miss event for foodies. For four days, the city comes alive with celebrity chefs, cooking demos, and fabulous parties. The Charleston Jazz Festival is another great event, featuring performances by world-renowned jazz musicians. If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, check out the Spoleto Festival USA, which features a variety of performing arts events. Highlights include concerts, operas, dance performances, theater productions, and even film screenings. You’ll be entertained for hours!
A few other festivals worth mentioning are the Cooper River Bridge Run (a 10K run that’s been going on since 1977), the Mullet Toss (yes it’s exactly what it sounds like), and Mount Pleasant Memorial Day Parade. All of these provide good fun and entertainment. So if you want to get to know this city, come in March or April!

The most popular places are the King Street shopping district, which has high-end stores, and the Market, which is full of local vendors selling everything from produce to handmade goods. There are also many art galleries and antique shops scattered throughout the city.
If you’re looking for a souvenir to take home, Charleston has plenty of options. Local artists sell their wares at the Marion Square Farmers’ Market and in art galleries across town. You can find traditional gifts like sweaters or hats made by Charleston knitters at various outlets, or you can buy something less conventional like locally-made pasta sauce or soap. However, if you’re not sure what to get someone as a gift, stop by one of the numerous jewelry stores. They have rings, necklaces, earrings and more that are perfect for every occasion.
And don’t forget about the candy! Sweet lovers will love the variety of candies on offer in Charleston; not only can they choose from chocolate bars or gummy bears but they can also find sugar-free treats too! While you’re exploring downtown Charleston, make sure to stop at historic sites like the Battery or Fort Sumter.
History
It became the capital of the Province of South Carolina in 1783. The city was burned during the American Civil War but quickly rebuilt afterwards. Charleston is known for its history, architecture, and culture. The city is also home to the oldest public college in the United States, the College of Charleston.
Built between 1822-1824, the church’s steeple is said to be one of the best examples of Georgian architecture in America. Founded by Quakers from Philadelphia and New York City, it has been an institution since 1851 and their campus includes a beautiful cemetery where some notable people are buried. Green space and nature trails
As you walk through the streets of Charleston, you can’t help but notice the abundance of green space and nature trails. The city is home to many parks and gardens, which are perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic lunch. And if you’re looking for a more adventurous hike, the nearby mountains offer plenty of trails to explore. You’ll have views of both the Lowcountry and Piedmont regions from high up on Sunset Rock Trail. Another favorite is Radcliffe Creek Greenway Trail, which winds through parts of town that were once plantations.
While in Charleston, don’t forget to stop by Magnolia Plantation and Gardens to get an idea of what life was like during this time period. You’ll find out how wealthy plantation owners lived as well as how enslaved Africans lived here too! Be sure to check out the Slave Cemetery where there’s a marker with the names of over 100 slaves who died at this plantation. If you want to learn about the Civil War history in Charleston, visit Fort Sumter National Monument where you can see all kinds of artifacts from the war.
