Don’t forget to visit The Great Hunebed, which dates back over 4000 years ago! The prehistoric monument stands tall on a hillside overlooking the green pastures below. Admission is free and visitors are welcome to walk up to its gate or just enjoy the view from below. It’s an awe-inspiring sight worth visiting any time of year!
When you’re done exploring the countryside, be sure to head back into town and check out some of the local shops. There are plenty of antiques stores to choose from including Jan de Klerk. He has been collecting furniture since he was 16 and still has items dating back 200 years!
Exploring by bike
Giethoorn is a Dutch village with more than 170 kilometers of canals, and the only way to really see it is by boat. You can rent a canoe or electric boat from one of the many rental companies in town, and then just paddle your way around.
There are also a few tour companies that will take you on a guided tour. The best part about exploring by boat is that you can go at your own pace and stop whenever you want to take a photo or just enjoy the view. Some boats have roofs so you can stay dry if it rains and they have little kitchens so you can cook some food while out on the water. Boat tours usually last three hours, but some last all day so they are perfect for those who like to relax and take their time seeing everything.
