Planning the Trip
When it comes to planning an adventurous trip, there are a few key things to keep in mind.
First, you’ll want to pick a destination that is known for its thrills.
Second, you’ll want to make sure you have the right gear.
Third, you’ll want to create a budget and stick to it.
Fourth, you’ll want to be sure to book your travel and accommodations well in advance.
And finally, you’ll want to make sure you have a good insurance policy in place. One with medical coverage, cancellation protection, baggage coverage – all of the important things. There’s nothing worse than running into unexpected issues when you’re on vacation!
So it’s important to prepare as much as possible before departure. I was able to go on my adventure thanks to Safeway Insurance Services, who helped me get everything in order and protected me against any possible hiccups. They even gave me some great advice about how to pack properly so I didn’t overpack or forget anything important.
Best of all, Safeway let me pay monthly installments so I didn’t have to come up with a big chunk of money upfront. That made booking my trip much easier because I had more freedom over what else I could do while saving up money.
Getting There
Alta is located in the heart of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, about 30 miles from Salt Lake City. The easiest way to get there is by car, and the drive is absolutely stunning. You’ll wind your way through canyons and forests before arriving at the base of the mountain.
From there, it’s a short hike or ski to the top. But don’t worry if you’re not up for hiking or skiing. There are plenty of other ways to enjoy Alta – like ziplining across five different mountainsides, taking an ice skating tour on natural ice (during the winter) or even paragliding off one of their peaks! So no matter what type of adventure seeker you are, this should be your next destination. For those looking for more adrenaline, snowboard down one of their four slopes.
For those looking for something less intense, stroll along their many nature trails and take in the views of their majestic valley. We guarantee that when you go to Alta, you will find exactly what you need – whether that’s relaxation or excitement. Either way, we hope you have as much fun as we did.
The Ski Resort
Alta is a world-renowned ski resort located in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah. It is one of the oldest ski resorts in the United States, and it has been attracting adventurers from all over the world since it opened in 1938. The resort offers a variety of activities for thrill-seekers, including skiing, snowboarding, and hiking.
And, if you’re looking for even more adventure, you can try your hand at ice climbing or dog sledding. We did not have time to partake in these activities during our visit this time around, but we hope to come back soon and explore these options! One thing that I didn’t mention in my previous post about this destination was how friendly the locals are.
Whether you’re asking for directions or ordering food, every person was so kind and accommodating – that’s something I really appreciated about our experience here. As I mentioned before, the Alta Ski Resort offers skiing and snowboarding, which means you don’t need any prior experience with either activity to enjoy yourself.
However, if you do want some instruction on either sport before visiting, there are several ski schools available for both kids and adults alike. You can also rent equipment for a small fee as well as purchase it outright.
Hiking Mount Altai
If you’re looking for an adventurous trip that will take your breath away, look no further than Mount Altai. Hiking to the top of this mountain is no easy feat, but the views from the summit are more than worth it. Not to mention, you’ll get a real sense of accomplishment upon reaching the top. Just be sure to come prepared with plenty of water and snacks, as there is no food or drink available once you start climbing.
Make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots, clothes made of natural fibers (cotton), sunglasses and sunscreen (especially if you’re fair skinned). The climb up the mountain can take anywhere from 4-6 hours depending on your level of fitness and pace. Once you reach the top, find a comfortable spot and take in the 360 degree view. To the north lies Siberia; to the east China; to the south Central Asia; and in front of you will be India.
We recommend staying until dusk when all four countries are visible – what an amazing experience! Then, make your way back down the mountain before nightfall. You may want to bring a headlamp just in case it gets dark while you’re still descending.
Eating in Alta
Alta is home to some of the best restaurants in the world. From fine dining to fast food, there’s something for everyone. And, of course, you can’t forget about the street food. Be sure to try the churros!
For coffee lovers, be sure to stop by Stumptown Coffee Roasters for a cup of joe. For more information on visiting Alta, check out this post from our blog. We hope that we’ve inspired you to take a trip to Alta, whether it’s with us or on your own. Happy adventuring!
Now that you know where to eat, let’s talk about what to do. There are plenty of activities in Alta year round – especially during summer and winter months when it’s most touristy. Some of our favorite things to do include hiking/mountaineering, snowboarding/skiing, zip lining (definitely not beginner friendly), ice climbing (be careful!), and dog sledding.
If any of those sound terrifying or too risky – don’t worry! There are still plenty of other things to do. Some highlights include stargazing, checking out all the amazing art galleries, shopping in Silverton, or just relaxing at one of Alta’s many resorts.
Our Stay in Alta
Alta is a small town located in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah. It is known for its ski resorts and winter recreation. We stayed in a cozy Airbnb cabin located right outside of town. The cabin was the perfect size for our group of six and had all the amenities we needed. Plus, it was close enough to the ski resort so we could walk there each day.
There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to skiing or snowboarding. Skiing seemed like the better option since I’ve never done that before. So, each morning after breakfast we would get up early and head out to the slopes where we would spend most of the day skiing. One of my favorite memories was getting on the chairlift by myself. I felt free and independent as I looked down at all the trees below me while they swayed back and forth with the wind.
That night, we spent time relaxing by our fireplace in front of a roaring fire as one last hoorah before heading back home to reality.
