Once upon a time, not so long ago, I traveled to Wernigerode, Germany with my family. It was my first time exploring the city, and I loved it! Though the city isn’t very large, it has plenty of little nooks and crannies worth exploring that could take you hours. Here are some of my top tips for exploring the beautiful city of Wernigerode (all in German).

Join a Local Tour

When exploring a new city, it can be helpful to join a local tour. This is especially true in Wernigerode, where the art and architecture are so intertwined with the tradition and culture. By joining a tour, you can make sure you don’t miss any of the important places or things to do.

The culture here is deeply rooted in tradition, so it’s easy to see that this was once a flourishing trade center for many different artists and tradesmen. One of the best places to explore in Wernigerode is by foot. There are so many things to see that you’ll want to take your time walking around and taking it all in. Plus, getting some exercise is a great way to start your day or work off some energy after a long day of sightseeing. Here are some of our favorite places to walk in Wernigerode -Römerberg Platz -If you’re looking for a beautiful city view, this square is the place to go. The square has been rebuilt multiple times over its centuries of existence, which means there’s always something new to look at!
-Grosser Garten -Walk through this park for an escape from city life into nature. You can find peace and quiet here among scenic greenery! There are also outdoor cafes where you can enjoy lunch while soaking up the sun.
-Schlossberg -If you like views, you won’t want to miss out on climbing Schlossberg hill. There are steps you can take up to a castle here that gives you 360-degree views of everything in sight. Be sure to bring water! It’s likely to be warm outside, and walking up all those stairs is tough work!

Enjoy Nature in All Its Glory

Wernigerode is the perfect place to enjoy nature in all its glory. If you’re looking for an adventure, you can go hiking or mountain biking in the summer, or skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

And if you just want to relax, you can take a leisurely stroll through one of the many parks or gardens. The Jungfrau Park has plenty of space for kids to run around, while the new garden overlooking the city offers spectacular views. There are also plenty of outdoor cafés and restaurants if you want to stop and grab a bite to eat. For those who prefer staying indoors, there are plenty of museums that explore both local history and art. You can even visit the indoor waterpark! After exploring all that Wernigerode has to offer, it’s time to stop by one of the many pubs and cafés. With their cozy atmosphere and friendly service, they make for a great way to end your day.

Explore its beautiful nature by taking the cable car up to Hirschberg Castle, hike through its wooded areas, or take a boat tour down the River Ilse! It’s all worth it. The best way to see everything that Wernigerode has to offer is to go for a long hike. You can start at the bottom of the city and make your way up to the top, taking in all of the sights along the way. Be sure to stop and rest often, as there are plenty of benches and cafes along the way.

Trust us, it’s worth the splurge. Start with one of their signature cocktails like their cherry blossom martini, which is made with gin and cherry liqueur. Then sample some local wine and savor the flavorsome entrees like braised rabbit leg in crispy phyllo pastry or roasted lamb fillet with rosemary potatoes and artichokes in red wine sauce.
You can even have one of their specialty cakes as dessert! We recommend trying their Tiramisu cake, which features chocolate mousse and coffee flavoured cream topped with espresso crumbs. If you’ve never been to Germany before, this is the perfect opportunity to discover its cuisine at its finest!

Jazz Club Onkel Otto is the perfect place to start exploring the music scene in Wernigerode. This club features live music every night, with a wide variety of genres represented. You can find everything from jazz and blues to rock and pop. There’s something for everyone at Jazz Club Onkel Otto.

The venue also offers an extensive wine list, as well as hearty German fare that pairs nicely with their selection of beer. Don’t forget to order some tarte flambée if you happen to stop by during the colder months! It’s the perfect combination of sweet and tart, just like I remember my home country of France tasting when I visit.
So next time you’re in Wernigerode, make sure to check out Jazz Club Onkel Otto. It won’t disappoint! I’ve spent many nights here chatting over glasses of wine with friends and sipping beers while enjoying performances by great musicians.
It was only after becoming friends with one of the bartenders that I found out he played saxophone in one of the bands who regularly performs there.
