Monteverde Reserve

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

The Monteverde Reserve is a private biological reserve located in the Cordillera de Tilarán, northwest of Puntarenas Province in Costa Rica. The reserve protects an area of 26,000 hectares (64,000 acres) of tropical forest. The reserve was created in 1972 by American biologist George Powell and his wife Viera.
There are over 2000 species of plants including 150 orchids and 1500 ferns, but only four mammals have been identified so far: two bats, one mouse and one opossum. Other mammals present are coati mundi, tigrillos, squirrels, armadillos and pacas. About 360 bird species live here, many endangered. These include brightly-colored quetzals, hermit hummingbirds, tanagers and toucans.
The first documented sighting of a quetzal for European ornithologists occurred at this site in 1871 when Lionel Walter Rothschild visited. In 1977 the Reserva Biológica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde was established as part of UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme to protect both the flora and fauna within its boundaries.

The hanging bridges of Monteverde are some of the most beautiful places in the world. They provide stunning views of the cloud forest and are a great place to take pictures. The bridges are also a great place to hike and explore the flora and fauna of the area.
One popular destination is the Painted Rock Bridge, which is painted with messages from visitors from all over the world. After exploring the scenic trails that make up the hanging bridges, it’s worth checking out the Sky Walk. There are two Sky Walks in Monteverde – one on either side of town – and both have spectacular views overlooking both sides of town.

These walks will show you what life is like for the locals in Monteverde, who live high up above ground level. At any time of day or night, this vantage point will give you access to a 360-degree view of Monteverde that can’t be matched anywhere else!

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a private nature reserve located in the Cordillera de Tilarán, northwest of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The reserve protects 6500 hectares of tropical forest and is home to a large number of flora and fauna species. Visitors to the reserve can explore the forest by hiking on one of the many trails or by taking a canopy tour.
They will see an abundance of plants and animals such as toucans, sloths, snakes, frogs, lizards and hummingbirds. One unique feature of this area is that it has over 600 species of epiphytes (plants that grow on other plants) which are found nowhere else in the world. In fact, up to 90% of the flora in this region consists of these types of plants.
These include mosses, lichens, bromeliads and even orchids. Epiphytes have evolved special ways for getting nutrients from the air because they cannot take them from soil like other plants do.
