Philosopher’s Path

The Philosopher’s Path is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kyoto. The path is a 2km walk that takes you through some of the city’s most beautiful scenery. The path is named after the philosopher, Kitaro Nishida, who used to walk this route every day.

The path is lined with cherry trees and is especially beautiful in the spring when the trees are in bloom. Along the way there are various temples that tourists can visit including Tenryu-ji Temple and Nanzen-ji Temple. Many people consider taking a stroll down the Philosopher’s Path to be one of their favorite memories from their time in Kyoto.
One entrance features cascading waterfalls while the other features a forest of ancient bamboo trees up on high hillsides.
Visitors should take note that although it seems like an idyllic location, during the height of summer it gets unbearably hot under all those thick bamboo leaves so come early in the morning or late at night if possible.

Ninen-zaka Slope

Located in the Higashiyama District, Ninen-zaka Slope is one of Kyoto’s most popular tourist destinations. On some days, visitors may even be able to see Mount Fuji!

Visitors can climb up a steep flight of stairs at the back of the temple grounds to reach Okuno-in, where there are various souvenir shops as well as temples that date back hundreds of years. One of these temples houses an important Buddha statue known as Nigatsu-do (Two Towers).
Nearby are the Otowa Waterfall and Hozu River, both of which offer great views and good places to take photos. Another nearby attraction is Ginkakuji Temple, which dates back to 1482. For over 400 years, it has been covered in gold leaf because its owner wanted to show off his wealth.
