If not, well then don’t worry about unsubscribing because I’ll never send you anything 😉 It was my first time in mainland Portugal and I was expecting it to be similar to the Algarve (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing), but Furnas felt so much fresher and cleaner.
Not that the Algarve isn’t clean, but we had just spent three days in Lagos (during which my husband’s head popped like a balloon due to all of his allergies) so we were pretty happy when we finally reached our hotel.

The Lagoa Azul

LAGOA AZUL (Ilha Grande) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

If you’re looking for a breathtaking place to visit, Furnas is definitely one of the most ravishing places on earth. The lagoa azul, or blue lagoon, is a stunning sight. It’s a huge lake that’s surrounded by lush greenery and has crystal clear water. It’s definitely worth a visit!
There are also many other things to do in Furnas such as taking in the sights at Algar do Carvão, touring this interesting town, hiking the Trilhos dos Vulcões (volcano trails), or walking along an active lava flow. You can also take boat tours around the Lagoa Azul if you want to see more of it up close. I highly recommend checking out Furnas when you’re visiting Madeira.

It’s unlike any other place I’ve ever been to before! I don’t know why but there was something about being here that made me feel so calm. It was hard to leave and I already miss it here! The people who live here seem so happy too- a stark contrast from where I’m from. It makes me wonder what it would be like to call this place home. Maybe one day I’ll find out!

Lagoa das Sete Cidades

The first stop on our tour of Furnas is the stunning Lagoa das Sete Cidades. This lake is actually two lakes, one blue and one green, that are separated by a narrow strip of land. Legend has it that the lakes were formed when a young couple died of a broken heart and their tears turned to these beautiful bodies of water. We can’t help but think this place deserves its title as one of the most ravishing places on earth. It was also hard not to feel emotional about the legend, especially because it reminds us so much of Romeo and Juliet. And if you look closely, you might be able to spot some native birds swimming in the waters.
It is here where we saw some nesting terns, kestrels and other birds.
We finished up our tour with an exploration of Furnas town center before heading back to Porto for dinner at one of the city’s many Michelin-starred restaurants!

From the Observation Deck, you can see almost the entire city of Furnas. The experience is even more magical at night, when the city is illuminated by thousands of twinkling lights. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a shooting star or two! There are many other viewpoints in the region that give similar views, but this one is our favorite.
Mountain Climbing – Alpamayo: Along with Alpamayo’s glacier-fed rivers and streams are also several waterfalls and glacial lakes, where visitors can get up close to the ice from afar. For those who want to really immerse themselves in the terrain, there are guided hiking tours available that take adventurers past thermal springs, mud volcanoes, and serenely silent snowy landscapes. You’ll never forget it! See all posts on Peru for additional recommendations for touristic places.
Hot Springs at Junin de los Andes: This town is one of our favorites due to its unparalleled variety of hot springs just outside of town, making for some pretty relaxing soaks even when you’re traveling with friends or family.
