Freudenberg is a small town located in the Rhine Gorge, a valley formed by the River Rhine. VI. Castle Burg Eltz
Burg Eltz is a castle situated in the hills above the Moselle River valley, in the Elztal (Eltz Valley) between Koblenz and Trier. It is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved castles in Germany. The castle has been owned by the same family for over 850 years and is currently inhabited by Countess Gabriela von Schönborn-Wiesentheid, née Countess zu Eltz.
To this day it still belongs to her descendants. Burg Eltz was built in the 12th century and is documented as having first appeared on May 3rd 1152, when count palatine Siegfried III transferred an estate called Burgilzo to his brother Ulrich with the consent of emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. However, the document does not mention a castle or any other buildings on the site. One possibility is that at this time only a moated medieval manor existed there.
Another theory is that originally there were two castles near the village of Eltz – one belonging to the House of Eltz and another belonging to the Lords of Wied; but these two castles were later combined into a single building. In 1186, during construction work on Burg Eltz, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa visited so frequently that he ordered ramparts constructed around it; they were probably finished within a year.
