Castle of Chillon

This is how to plan a visit to Chillon Castle

The castle is home to a museum, which tells the story of its past occupants. Built by Savoy dynasty princes during the 12th century, it was enlarged over time with more comfortable living quarters. In the 16th century, it became a military prison when occupied by Bernese forces during their conquest of Vaud. Famous prisoners such as Counts William I of Orange-Nassau, Jacques d’Arc and Louis XVI were imprisoned here.
It later became a psychiatric hospital before falling into ruin in 1832 after its last inhabitants left. A preservation society was founded at the end of the 19th century and restoration work started under architect Viollet-le-Duc who had rebuilt parts of Notre Dame de Paris.
