A Hidden Gem in the Shire: Exploring the Beauty of Hobbiton
When the leaves begin to turn red and the air starts to smell like pumpkin spice, you know it’s time to visit Hobbiton in New Zealand once again. You may have seen pictures of this enchanting location on screen, but nothing compares to seeing it in person and exploring every single inch of it with your friends. It’s magical, to say the least! If you haven’t visited Hobbiton in New Zealand yet, here are some tips that will help you make the most of your trip.
Hobbiton Movie Set (Begin your adventure)
If you’re looking for a calm and beautiful place to explore, look no further than Hobbiton Movie Set. This hidden gem is located in the Shire and is a popular tourist destination for those who want to see where some of their favorite scenes from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were filmed.
There are plenty of things to do here, from taking a tour of the set to exploring the natural beauty of the area. No matter what you do, you’re sure to fall in love with this hidden gem. You might even find yourself feeling calm enough to read one of Tolkien’s books before exploring the natural beauty.
I highly recommend visiting Hobbiton if you can fit it into your vacation plans! It’s an easy drive from Christchurch or a great day trip from Auckland or Wellington.
The Green Dragon Tavern
Hobbiton is one of the most beautiful places in the Shire and there are plenty of things to do. The Green Dragon Tavern is a great place to start your exploration. This hidden gem is located in the heart of Hobbiton and is a great place to relax and enjoy a pint.
The tavern has a cozy atmosphere and is perfect for enjoying a meal or drink with friends. If you’re looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, look no further than the Green Dragon Tavern. They offer many services such as food, drinks, accommodation, and much more.
The accommodations are also reasonably priced making it easy for tourists on a budget to stay at this hidden gem in the Shire. I can’t wait to visit this wonderful establishment again soon! Tourism is important because it allows us to explore new cultures, learn about different people, and experience new ways of living.
Bag End & Farmer Maggot’s Farm
Hobbiton, located in the Shire, is a hidden gem often overlooked by tourists. However, those who take the time to explore this quaint little village are rewarded with its beauty and charm. From Bag End, home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, to Farmer Maggot’s Farm, there is much to see and do in Hobbiton.
The guidebooks say that Hobbits have lived peacefully here for centuries, and it’s easy to see why.
The town offers scenic walking trails, such as The Green Hill Trail from Michel Delving to Stock, which features views of all three major rivers (the Brandywine River) and numerous waterfalls.
The Misty Mountain Path takes visitors on an enchanting trek through the Old Forest up into Mirkwood before eventually leading them back into Lothlorien. And if you’re looking for something more serene, you can always visit Lake Town and relax on one of the many benches or picnic tables. Tourism opportunities abound in Hobbiton!
Church and Bachelors Establishment
Hobbiton is a hidden gem in the Shire, and it’s easy to see why. The picturesque town is home to many beautiful sights, including the Church and Bachelors Establishment. This stately building is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hobbiton, and it’s easy to see why.
The Church and Bachelors Establishment is a beautiful building that is steeped in history. Built by Bilbo Baggins as a wedding gift for his son Frodo Baggins and his bride-to-be Arwen, this beautiful structure has been standing since 1640. It was designed as a fusion of ancient Japanese architecture with British Georgian elements and finally built in 1660 after several years of construction.
The altar inside the church features an intricately carved statue depicting Jesus Christ sitting on the throne with two children by his side – representing innocence.
The Party Tree and Lake Town
Hobbiton is a hidden gem in the Shire, and there is no better place to explore its beauty than by visiting the Party Tree and Lake Town. The Party Tree is a beautiful sight, and it’s surrounded by a lake that is perfect for swimming or fishing.
Lake Town is also a great place to explore, and it has a lot of history. It was once an industrial town with mines and mills, but now it’s been abandoned because they are too dangerous. There are also some interesting things to see like Bag End, Bilbo Baggins’ house from Lord of the Rings! You can visit these sites on your own or you can book a tour online from one of many providers.
Tours often include visits to several places, so be sure to read carefully before booking. I recommend taking a guided tour because the guide will tell you all about each site and may even take photos if you want them! Some tours go deeper into the mine, so if you’re looking for a more immersive experience this might be the best option.
Old Mill, Brandy Hall, Bucklebury Ferry, Ivy Bush Inn & Carrock
If you’re a fan of The Lord of the Rings, or simply love exploring quaint villages, then a visit to Hobbiton is a must! This hidden gem is located in the Shire and is full of beautiful sights. From the Old Mill to Brandy Hall, there’s plenty to see and do.
And don’t forget to stop by the Bucklebury Ferry and Ivy Bush Inn for some traditional food and drink. Carrock is also worth a visit for its stunning views. You can even take a walk through Bag End, Frodo Baggins’ house from the movie. You’ll be transported back into Middle Earth as you explore this small piece of paradise tucked away in New Zealand. But make sure to plan your trip soon as it closes on September 30th for winter!

Trollshaw Forest & Trollshaws Stone Circle
The Trollshaws are a dark and foreboding woodlands in the north of Middle-earth. But if you venture into this dark forest, you’ll find a hidden gem: the Trollshaws Stone Circle. This stone circle is thought to be where the Hobbits first settled in Middle-earth.
And it’s easy to see why they chose this spot: the views from the top of the hill are simply breathtaking. From up here, you can see just how green and lush the land of the Shire is. In fact, when I was up there on a particularly sunny day last week, I could even make out some fields over by Bree!
It seems like an odd juxtaposition between bleakness and beauty – but somehow, it works. That being said, you do need to know what you’re doing before venturing too far into the woods as it can get very dangerous very quickly.
I’m not a historian or anthropologist , so please feel free to share any new discoveries that might come your way!
Please subscribe for future blog posts about other parts of Middle-earth – my next destination will be Mirkwood Forest!
Rivendell & Amon Sûl
Rivendell is a hidden gem in the Shire, and its beauty is definitely worth exploring. The elves who live there are incredibly welcoming, and there’s always something new to see. From the majestic mountains to the peaceful rivers, Rivendell is a place that will stay with you long after you leave.
Amon Sûl is another hidden gem in the Shire that’s definitely worth exploring. This ancient city is full of history, and its streets are lined with beautiful buildings. There are so many things to explore here, like the old cathedral and small neighborhoods just waiting for exploration.
Don’t forget to stop by one of the cafes or bakeries on your way out! Rivendell has some great coffee shops, but I’m partial to the bakery down by the river.
I also love buying pastries from Bree when I go into town; they’re some of my favorite memories from this trip! If you’re looking for a little more adventure, though, make sure to check out Trollshaws.
